Clash News Winter 2009 – Stage 2 report
We are roughly 1 month away from the 2009 JConcepts Clash. Entries continue to flow in and once again we expect a great turnout. We had over 275 entries last year and we expect more this year. Sign-up here online or call 352-241-4976 to sign-up over the phone.
Expect a fantastic competitive turn-out of some of the largest names in R/C. I have spoke with the Hurricane Club and all signs point to a fantastic event. Dave Warr and Joey Perez have been coordinating with the Park Rangers and notified them of the expectation and size of the event and should have things completely under control. The pre-Clash layout has started to take shape (please see photo). This is not 100% of the Clash layout but only an example of the work in progress. Expect a technical layout with a blue or black groove surface.
A warm-up race will be held on November 29th. Mark your calendars! : )
2-time Clash defending 1/8th buggy champion Ryan Maifield will be back fresh off his Punishing Nationals run at the 2009 ROAR Nats. Expect a heated battle! Ready to give Ryan some serious competition is 2-time IFMAR World Champion Ryan Cavalieri who has signed on to compete along with Team Associated Team Manager Brent Thielke to race in this year’s event. Another IFMAR World Champion driver has expressed interest and we are waiting for a confirmation before we make that announcement.
Defending champion and Florida local JR Mitch will be back to defend his 1/8th truck championship. Can anyone beat JR in 1/8th truck?
Lee Martin defending 2wd and 4wd champion will be back to defend the coveted titles. Perhaps an up and comer will have something for him? Will a driver from the past have what it takes to take him down?
Rules
We are going to be observing the 2009 - 2010 ROAR rules at this event. If you are unaware of these rules or updates please visit the link below. In particular we are going to be adhering to the 2010 rules regarding 1/8th buggy and truck tires and wheels. We will continue to use a visual technical inspection as the race builds in popularity. If you are looking to bump-up during the weekend or plan on finishing in the top 3 you will want to be utilizing a legal combination. : )

Lake Park Rules
As a new addition to the rules and regulations for the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation it is now necessary to pay $2.00 per day to enter Lake Park. Please be prepared at the gate to pay to enter the Park. Unfortunately this is not negotiable and it is necessary in order to keep the park running. You will be given a ticket for your vehicle that is good for the whole day. Example here
Regional Park Entry
- $2.00/vehicle
- Up to 8 persons
- $1/person over 8
Practice days
Practice will start at 8:00am on Thursday December 10th. Practice will alternate between electric and nitro sessions before closing at 6:00pm.
Race schedule
A tentative schedule has been prepared to help determine length of the program and amount of available time. In a perfect world with no problems we are currently scheduled to run 4 qualifiers. Things change and so does the weather so this is very tentative.
Qual. Points will be used with Best 2 out of 4 scoring your result. This gives a driver wanting to just race on Saturday and Sunday only the option of coming in to qualify on Saturday and running 2 qualifiers. Please remember if a 4th round is dropped for scheduling or weather reasons, that is the risk taken by the driver that misses the first day of qualifying.
Track preparation
The current plan is to prepare the track with Calcium Chloride. This usually produces a blue groove and helps keep the dust down. Be prepared for changing conditions.
Race direction
Jimmy Babcock is coming in as scheduled. Joining Jimmy will be Canyon Thompson to help with race control. Tim Davis and Matt Mosieur are also scheduled to provide color commentary during the racing action. They should provide some interesting comments and interviews. Fred Reep will also be on hand to pump in some sound and provide some colorful music and interviews during the day.
LiveRC update
Brandon Rohde will be on hand to handle the LiveRC scoring that will be available on his website. Lake Park does not have the best internet connection so we are going to be using an air card. We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best internet connection possible.

Check in and registration
The first thing to do when you arrive at the track is to check in. We are going to be doing this outside the track area by the JConcepts hospitality area. Only registered drivers and mechanics will be allowed onto the track for practice. You have to register before you can practice. Very simple.
Covered pit space
Covered pits with power are only being offered on a first come first serve basis. This space is limited and drivers traveling in from out of the area should have the first priority to the areas within the fenced in area. Local drivers and others that are familiar with Lake Park should come prepared with your normal pit area arrangements.
Hotel information
There are many hotels in the Tampa area that are available during the weekend of the Clash event. What is listed below is a suggestion and where the JConcepts team is currently staying.

Modified Classes
We will be using a Control Tire Program in the modified classes for this year’s event. The choices are listed below. JConcepts will be providing a complete front and rear set of tires with each first 1/10th scale modified entry at no additional charge. This means if you enter 2wd modified you will be given 1 pair of JConcepts front tires and 1 pair of JConcepts rear tires. The quantity of tires will not be controlled but the type and make will be so it will be the responsibility of the drivers to choose wisely during the day. This makes the selection process simpler for the drivers coming in from out of town.
Control Tire Program includes the following combinations of tires for the JConcepts Clash.
Groovy fronts (green compound) recommended in all conditions
Double Dees front and rear allowed (green compound) recommended for early morning conditions
Bar Codes front and rear allowed (white, blue or orange compound) recommended for afternoon, grooved and hot conditions
*Cut and shut front tires are allowed for 2wd buggy. No multiple stage inserts. Stock And-1 inserts only.

1/8th buggy Classes – electric
A very surprising class at the 2008 Clash, the 1/8th electric buggy class was a major success. We are bringing back this exciting class once again for 2009 and hoping for an even larger turn-out. Track
Expect a fast track and layout. Special consideration will be made for 1/8th buggies and trucks to ensure available racing space and constant speed. The Lake Park facility is more than capable of handling at layout of this nature with its dimensions being 153' x 68'. The 2007 and 2008 track layouts were fast and following. Expect more of the same and we are going to get a little more air this year on the jumps as well. J

Super Stock Classes
The “Super” Stock Buggy and Truck classes will be using 13.5t motors, and not 10.5t as many assume. This should provide everyone with easy access to the current “standard” stock brushless motor for off-road. As a brushed equivalent we recommend a 27t motor.

The stock short course class is exactly how it sounds. Intended for stock SCT trucks this class will only allow changes to the radio, receiver, body and tires. Any combination of stock SCT RTR motor and speed controls from the 4 available vehicles are allowed. The receiver may be changed to accommodate another radio system. Body changes are allowed, as long as the body appears similar to a CORR type short course truck. Suspension setup adjustments are permitted, but usage of aftermarket shocks or hop-ups parts are prohibited. No expert or sponsored drivers allowed.

Covered Pitting:
We’ve had many questions regarding covered pitting, and YES we will be offering it. We will have tents, tables, chairs, and power available at the track for those flying in. This will be at a cost of $35 and it is encouraged that you reserve these as space is limited.
Battery Suggestions
We highly recommend Lipo batteries for the extended
racing action offered at the Clash. There are still
some racers who use the NiMh batteries, and we suggested
backs 4200 mah or higher. We had good results with 3700
mah batteries, but the added capacity of the 4200+ would
be extra insurance. All Lipo batteries (7.4v for all
but 4wd electric 1/8th) are legal for competition, but
it is recommended to use the hard shell type. Anything
over 5000 mah would be safe for a longer 15 minute main.
Here is some very useful information regarding Lipo
batteries. Please read this information prior to use:
